I've heard that the geology of Scarborough - no bedrock, high water table, etc making tunneling in Scarborough a challenge. For example, the previous plan for the STC station site involved a residential towers than did not have underground parking because of "high water table". How are these challenges addressed and can they cause delays?

Strabag, the company selected to build the tunnel for the Scarborough subway extension has previous experience completing tunnels in Canada and around the world. Their insights from past projects has heightened their awareness to ensure a comprehensive monitoring program is developed and operated throughout the tunneling.

Experts will be consulted to assist with potential challenges related to buildings, utilities, overflowing traffic, essential services and the natural elements of the ground. Taking a proactive approach to identify potential issues will help Strabag make the necessary adjustments, if required.

The current pictures place it in the area, but is there anything more precise as to the location of the station.

As the construction continues, plans are being developed to finalize the exact location for Scarborough Centre station. We are working to release some new information regarding the subways in the near future.

Hi, what’s the latest project timeline and how realistic is it that it’ll be met? Why are the main drivers of the timeline and what’s being done to try and maintain it. We really need a subway station at Scarborough City Center so hopefully the timeline of « before 2030 » is realistic.

To drive efficiencies, the decision was made to split the development of the extension into two contracts. By separating the construction of our tunnels, stations, rails and systems, it gives Metrolinx the flexibility to collaborate with specialists who have experience delivering high quality projects on time.

There is a plan to extend the Sheppard subway line to meet the Scarborough Extension in future - can you explain how you are planning for this future extension as part of the design of this project (tunnels, future stations, ventilation etc). It would be a real shame to have to dig up the streets twice!

To improve transit accessibility across the region, Metrolinx strives to incorporate future development plans within their current construction projects. The appropriate stakeholders are consulted to ensure potential issues for connectivity are identified and resolved to avoid uneccessary disruptions.

A Metrolinx map on how transit in the GTA will look in the future had the Eglinton East LRT on it. The TTC plan for Eglinton East LRT requires it be underground on Eglinton until it reaches Midland. The SSE plan requires "cut and cover" on Eglinton up to Midland. If Eglinton East LRT is going to be a future transit project, it is not prudent to "rough in" the underground portion of the LRT while you also constructing the SSE portion?

To build connectivity with transit, Metrolinx has continuous communication with the city of Toronto. The Eglinton East LRT and the Scarborough subway extension are different projects, making it essential for ongoing discussions to identify any issues with integration for connectivity in future transit plans.

A tunnel is no good without trains to run on it - will Metrolinx be funding new subway trains for this extension to Scarborough, as the current trains are old and often have broken AC in the summertime?

As a part of the Line 2 subway extension into Scarborough, new trains will be purchased to enhance the existing fleet. Collaborations between Metrolinx, TTC and the province of Ontario will be ongoing to provide municipalities with services that meet their expectations.

The subway is coming to Scarborough - great! Can you provide more public information on other parts of this project - what else are you building - bus terminals, ventilation shafts, parking at stations, actual locations of the stations rather than vague locations - the Ontario line is 'behind' this project, yet has significantly more detail about what will be built!

Supporting infrastructure will include emergency exit buildings, ventilation, bus terminals and power stations to operate the subway.

I think that Lawrence station on this extension should be expanded to 'Lawrence East' so it can replace Lawrence East RT station on existing line 3

Can you explain how you will be helping the TTC while the subway is built and buses replace the SRT? New, expanded or temporary bus terminals, more GO trains from Agincourt to downtown (or a shuttle to Kennedy), use of GO buses, signage/wayfinding etc

Metrolinx supports municipalities with transit and will continue to assist the TTC as they’ve decided to shut down the SRT in 2023. The TTC is currently evaluating their options and they plan to present some recommendations to their board in 2022.

We’re committed to staying updated as the TTC’s plans develop, to ensure we can have the necessary resources and provide the same level of service. We also recognize there may be opportunities for GO services to potentially integrate while the subway is being completed.

How do you ensure there are not significant cost overruns and if so, who foots the bill?

Oct 14, 2021 - 10:12

We have a proactive contract management approach which seeks to avoid issues that lead to delays and cost overruns. In the event there is an issue, our contract has a clear delineation of who is responsible for additional costs.

Will there be an enclosed bridge between the new Scarborough Centre Station and Scarborough Town Centre (the shopping mall) like there is with the current Line 3 station? Depending on the location of the new Scarborough Centre Station, could the existing Line 3 guideway be repurposed as an enclosed pedestrian walkway after Line 3 closes?

Metrolinx's avatar

Metrolinx
Oct 12, 2021 - 20:04

The new station for Scarborough Centre is directly south of the shopping centre, 500m east of the existing station presenting some challenges for a bridge connection. The city is undergoing a separate study of the area that will review pedestrian connections to and from the station.

If you're going to extend line 2 to Sheppard, shouldn't you also extend line 4 to Sheppard and McCowan that there can be an eastern loop in the subway system & that a better connection between North York and Scarborough be provided?

There have been internal discussions, but no formal funding announced for this expansion. Within the design, Metrolinx aims to ensure new transit being built has options for future connectivity.

I assume a decision has been made regarding future extensions of line 2 and the future extension of the Sheppard line behind the Sheppard and McGowan intersection. This would affect crossing levels of tunnel and track elevations and station design.
I haven’t been able to find any details on your websites and I would appreciate learning what the plans are for this extension.

To enhance safety on this extension for blind riders, I think Lawrence and Scarborough Centre stations should have side platforms while Sheppard has a center island platform.

By design, there will be side platforms at Lawrence and Scarborough centre stations. The tunnel is being bored using a single TBM, therefore the tracks will be in the centre and the platforms will have to be built on the side.

To enhance safety for riders who are blind or have low vision, It's best that Lawrence and Scarborough Centre stations have side platforms while McCowan has a center island platform

Instead of McCowan, you should name it 'Sheppard East' so that you can have 3 TTC stations with 'Sheppard' in the TTC network just like 'Lawrence'
