MetrolinxMetrolinx supports municipalities with transit and will continue to assist the TTC as they’ve decided to shut down the SRT in 2023. The TTC is currently evaluating their options and they plan to present some recommendations to their board in 2022.
Station at McCowan and Sheppard

Don Mills stop to Sheppard East Extension

Health costs to residents

MetrolinxWe have a number of different measures we can put in place to reduce and manage any impacts to our communities including specific limits for construction noise at different times of the day, using water tankers to reduce dust and using construction equipment and methods that minimize noise and vibration.
Expropriation
AnonymousWhich houses will be expropriated on McCowan and Lawrence to build the station?

MetrolinxHomeowners that reside within identified Transit Corridor Lands will be contacted directly by Metrolinx to discuss expropriation if it's necessary. Each case is considered independently, and every effort is made to reach amicable agreements and compensate property owners with fair market value.
Kennedy Commons

MetrolinxResidents living near Kennedy Commons will have a short commute to either McCowan and Sheppard or McCowan and Progress. These locations will be the closet subway stations being built as part of the line 2 extension.

Bus Terminals

MetrolinxLawrence subway station will be underground located at Lawrence Avenue, west of McCowan Road. Scarborough Centre subway station will also be underground, located east of McCowan Road and north of Bushby Drive. Sheppard station is an underground terminus station located directly east of McCowan Road and north of Sheppard Avenue.
Bus terminal at Scarborough Towne Centre

MetrolinxGO Bus and intercity buses must relocate from the existing terminal in Fall 2022. TTC requires the extra space to run additional bus service to accommodate the decommissioning of Line 3 Scarborough, scheduled for 2023. A temporary location for GO Transit is proposed to be in operation between Fall 2022 and 2030.

Conversations are ongoing with the hospital to minimize property impacts and create efficiencies and cost savings. Minor construction activities may be scheduled during off-peak, weekend or overnight hours.
Impact on businesses and commuters

MetrolinxBusinesses within the community may be impacted to complete the line 2 expansion. Metrolinx works with owners and tenants to see how they may be able to continue operating. If operations are impacted, compensation and supports may be provided. Each case is considered independently to ensure the right solutions are in place for each business.

Construction impact

MetrolinxBefore we start any construction, we must consider the infrastructure that is already in the area. Metrolinx is working closely with utility companies to reduce community impacts and to complete any preparatory works in advance of the tunnel contract award.
Danforth-McCowan property owners

MetrolinxTo drive efficiencies and maintain the timelines of the project, the decision was made to split the development of the extension into two contracts. One contract is for the tunnelling and the other is for the stations, rails and systems (SRS). The SRS construction will commence in 2023.

Parking

MetrolinxOur current plans for stations on the Scarborough Subway Extension do not include parking lots or garages but we are designing stations to maximize connectivity and convenience. Final designs for the stations, including passenger pick up and drop off locations, will be developed through the procurement process that started in September 2021. As these designs are finalized, we will share them with the community.
Kennedy station

MetrolinxThere will be intermittent impacts but the intent is to mitigate these as much as possible to maintain some level of operation at Kennedy station during construction. Where closures cannot be avoided, the TTC is involved in the process to determine the preferred closure options and mitigations.

Depth

MetrolinxThe tunnel boring machines (TBMs) will operate up to 35 metres underground. The stations, rails and systems contract is currently in the procurement phase and we anticipate this construction to start in the spring of 2023. Plannnig for our subway station designs are still in progress.
Bus terminal
