Launch and Extraction Shaft: Sheppard Avenue and Kennedy Station

The Scarborough Subway Extension requires a tunnel mobilization site in the area of the proposed Sheppard Station (north east corner of Sheppard Avenue and McCowan Road).

A tunnel boring machine (TBM) will be assembled and lowered into the ground at the launch shaft. Launch shaft construction is expected to begin in the summer of 2021 and the TBM is expected to launch in spring 2022. The launch site will remain active while tunnelling is completed and as muck is removed and the precast segment tunnel linings are stored before being lowered and installed.

The TBM will be launched from the launch site’s north east corner, travelling south to an extraction shaft located at Midland and Eglinton Avenue.

The extraction shaft is where the boring machine is dismantled and removed from the ground after completing the tunnel.
