Study Highlights
- The purpose of the study was to identify existing conditions for wildlife and landscape features within the project study area and assess potential impacts and recommend avoidance, mitigation, monitoring, and/or compensation measures.
- Based on a desktop review of policies and previous studies relating to the aquatic and land environments.
- Field studies for Species at Risk (SAR), vegetation, wildlife, and aquatic habitats will commence in spring 2022 and results will be distributed in summer 2022.
Environmental Components, Potential Effects and Proposed Mitigation and Monitoring Measures
Environmental Component 1: Migratory Breeding Birds and nests
Potential Effects
Disturbance or destruction of migratory bird nests.
Proposed Mitigation Measures
- If activities are proposed to occur during the general nesting period, a breeding bird and nest survey will be undertaken prior to required activities.
Proposed Monitoring Measures
- Regular monitoring will be undertaken to confirm that activities do not encroach into nesting areas or disturb active nesting sites.
Environmental Component 2: Wildlife
Potential Effects
Disturbance, displacement or mortality of wildlife.
Proposed Mitigation Measures
- If wildlife is encountered, measures will be implemented to avoid destruction, injury, or interference with the species, and/or its habitat.
Proposed Monitoring Measures
- On‑site inspection will be undertaken to confirm the implementation of the mitigation measures and identify corrective actions if required.
Environmental Component 3: Species at Risk (SAR)
Potential Effects
Habitat loss, disturbance and/or mortality to potential SAR.
Proposed Mitigation Measures
- All requirements of the Endangered Species Act (ESA) and Species at Risk Act (SARA) will be met.
Proposed Monitoring Measures
- On‑site inspection will be undertaken to confirm the implementation of the mitigation measures and identify corrective actions if required.
Environmental Component 4: Watercourses
Potential Effects
Erosion and sedimentation to watercourses from construction.
Proposed Mitigation Measures
- An Erosion and Sediment Control Plan and a Spill Prevention and Response Plan will be prepared prior to and implemented during construction.
Proposed Monitoring Measures
- On‑site inspection will be undertaken to confirm the implementation of the mitigation measures and identify corrective actions if required.
Environmental Component 5: Fish and Fish Habitat
Potential Effects
Potential for direct, in-water impacts to fish and fish habitat.
Proposed Mitigation Measures
- In the event that in-water and/or near water construction works are required, the restricted construction activity timing windows and appropriate mitigation measures will be followed, as identified in Applicable Law and through consultation with the relevant authorities.
Proposed Monitoring Measures
- On‑site inspection will be undertaken to confirm the implementation of the mitigation measures and identify corrective actions if required.
Environmental Component 6: Vegetation
Potential Effects
Permanent loss of vegetation or wetlands due to construction.
Proposed Mitigation Measures
- Vegetation removal shall be kept to a minimum and limited to within the construction area.
Proposed Monitoring Measures
- On‑site inspection will be undertaken to confirm the implementation of the mitigation measures and identify corrective actions if required.
