Metrolinx: Building the transportation network we need for the future

Metrolinx is moving.  We are delivering the largest transportation infrastructure program in Canadian history and it will transform the Greater Toronto Hamilton Area (GTHA).  To give you a sense of the scope of what is planned, Metrolinx has an ambitious plan that envisions more than 1,200 kilometers of rapid transit – more than triple what exists now – so that over 80 per cent of residents in the GTHA will live within two kilometers of this network.  Currently, there are more than 400 rapid transit projects underway, creating enormous economic benefits of 800,000-900,000 person years of employment and an infusion of $110-$130 billion to our economy.  When complete, the Metrolinx plan will transform the way the GTHA moves. 

Our region’s growth is a sign of success and opportunity – but our transportation networks are at their limit. The GTHA is growing fast, and by 2041, it’s estimated that more than nine million residents will call the region home. This increase of almost 30 per cent means even more people on area roads year on year.

Guided by the Regional Transportation Plan, Metrolinx is driving forward projects across the GTHA – like expanded GO Train service, bike sharing programs, bus rapid transit projects, and light rail projects – to create more connections so the entire region can grow and thrive into the future.

Creating Connections in Markham

Over the next 25 years, the York Region population is expected grow by 68 per cent.  Metrolinx is building in and around Markham to provide residents with more connections and better service that meets the demands of the growing population, regardless of how you choose to get around.

For residents of Markham, Metrolinx is working to create more connections to the entire GO network with faster, more frequent local service that extends beyond the peak service currently available.  To make this happen we’re adding a second track from Union to Unionville and making enhancements at Unionville, Milliken and Agincourt GO Stations.  This includes new and relocated platforms with canopy enclosure, pedestrian tunnels and elevators, parking expansion and upgraded customer amenities. We’ve also proposed a grade separation at Steeles Avenue East to support increased service in Markham, and over time we’ll be introducing electrification infrastructure to enable new trains that will cut journey times by up to 20%. Our Markham Centre Mobility Hub Study will ensure planned transit and road alignments in Markham Centre are coordinated.  All of the work being done along the Stouffville corridor – in Markham and beyond – will bring all day, evening and weekend service to Markham residents.

Our promise to you

We know there will be community-level disruption required to build a region-wide, integrated rapid transit network. Bringing new levels of GO service to Markham won’t come easily, but as we build in and around your community, we promise to keep you informed and to work with you to make sure disruptions are kept to a minimum.  From planning through to construction, we’ll be working closely with residents, elected officials and other community agencies to ensure we’re building the regional transportation system we all want and need, but in a way that is respectful to the communities we are part of.
