Transit Safety LIVE - June 30, 2021

On June 30, 2021, Metrolinx hosted a presentation and live Q&A focused on community and customer safety and security on Metrolinx property and transit systems. During the virtual townhall, we answered top-voted questions submitted by registrants, live questions from participants using a Zoom call-in option, as well as questions submitted through a community safety survey. Questions were related to visibility of Transit Safety, diversity and inclusion, safe spaces for all, and general safety concerns. We’ll be posting answers to questions from the event on this page soon.

For those who weren’t able to join us, you’ll find the video recording below. As we progress through the Transformation Journey, we look forward to further engagement to work towards a shared vision of safe and inclusive spaces.

Call-In With Your Question

As we continue to evolve the virtual engagement format, we are adding a call-in option for tonight’s event. To ask your question by voice, join the Zoom meeting here. We aim to keep each question and subsequent answer to 3 minutes allowing for as many call-in questions as possible.

NOTE: please ensure you have the latest version of Zoom installed.

Why do all the officers at union just stand there while homeless people take over the station? It’s so scary waiting for my train

When will Metrolinx start designing safety into its stations and transfer points rather than leaving it an afterthought?

Have GO looked at implementing adding emergency safety buttons on the back of buses, especially double deck like OCTranspo? Drivers cant really see back there.

GO should look at installing call boxes with camera at platforms. Especially at bus loops cause at night at unattended stations, it feels very unsecure.

I also really liked the night stop program with OCTranspo where buses stop at the same bay at station after 21:00. Its a easy and cheap way to increase safety.

I like how at Union Station, every departure is announced on weekdays. May this please be extended to 7 days a week and at all stations, or perhaps even automated, just like in the Union Station Bus Terminal? It keeps passengers informed very well. Thanks!

Since many train and bus stations are unstaffed, it would be a good idea to install dual-purpose intercoms which would either allow the user to report an emergency or simply get information on how to get somewhere. On the TTC, their intercoms have both an "Information" button to ask for information, and an "Emergency" button to report an emergency.

I have heard conflicting reports about whether or not passengers are allowed to take photos and video on GO Transit property for non-commercial purposes (eg. transit enthusiasts taking photos of buses and stations). Could the transit safety team clarify what is and isn't allowed? As a suggestion, could a page be created on the GO Transit or Metrolinx website outlining what is and isn't allowed in regards to personal photography and filming?

At night, since many people feel unsafe travelling alone, I think it would be a good idea for the accessibility platform to be well-marked as the "Off-Peak Waiting Area" or "Designated Waiting Area", as the accessibility coach has the CSA, which would make people feel safer when travelling alone and give people a person to ask for help in case they are in trouble. More security cameras, lighting, an intercom, and a bench could be added to the accessibility platforms to encourage people travelling alone off-peak to board here. It would make it akin to the "Designated Waiting Area" on the TTC subway.
