Update
Our team is continuing to support our residents, business and communities. During this time, Open Houses have moved to a virtual format and the most recent event can be found below. We received questions that we didn’t get to during the virtual session and have started posting answers at the bottom of this page. We are working to answer the remaining questions and will share them as soon as possible.
Archive – March 30, 2021
On March 30 2021, Metrolinx hosted a virtual open house including speakers from our senior leadership team with 77 people in attendance. During the one-hour open house, we answered as many questions as possible about the Scarborough Subway Extension. Participants voted on questions and were particularly interested in hearing about progress, project design, schedule, property impacts and mitigation measures for noise and vibration.
In case you missed the event, you’ll find the answers in the video recording below. We also received additional questions during the virtual session and are committed to answering those as well. Answers will be posted at the bottom of this page.

Station Names
AnonymousDo you think instead of Sheppard East, to rename it as McCowan, then when plans to extend Sheppard Subway East, then it becomes Sheppard East - McCowan
Answer
MetrolinxThank you for your feedback! Station names should ideally allow users to mentally locate the facility in the region. We'll also try to ensure it's unique from any other station by avoiding repetition of names or similar sounds.
Construction
AnonymousWhat does cut and cover construction mean? How does it differ from regular construction? Is the crosstown being built using cut and cover?
Answer
MetrolinxCut-and-cover is a more traditional method of building a subway station where the ground above the site is excavated, and infrastructure is built in the excavated space. The stations along the crosstown were also built with cut-and-cover construction designs.
Stations
AnonymousWhy not go above ground with the station at Lawrence/ highland creek.
Answer
MetrolinxWhen the environmental assessment was completed, it was determined that this option could build new transit while avoiding additional issues that may occur during the construction.
Properties
AnonymousHas a final decision been made about which properties Metrolinx will need to acquire at the McCowan and Lawrence intersection? .
Answer
MetrolinxAs we refine our plans and designs for the project, we’re getting a clearer picture of the properties we’ll need to make it a reality. Once we determine a need for a certain property, we reach out directly to the owner to discuss next steps.
Stations
AnonymousFor the stations Lawrence East, Scarborough Centre, Sheppard East, what will the bus bay look like and will those station have Centre platform or side platform
Answer
MetrolinxThere will be two side platforms for the Lawrence and Scarborough Centre stations. Additional information will be coming in the near future regarding their exact locations.
Community Impacts
AnonymousWhat impacts will digging at the launch shaft at McCowan/Sheppard have on the neighbouring branch of Highland Creek and further downstream?
Answer
MetrolinxWe do not anticipate any impacts from the digging at the launch shaft. The tail track will go under Highland Creek so we are working with the TRCA and other stakeholders to complete a constructability analysis. Construction under the systems, rails and stations contract will begin in 2023.
Stations
AnonymousIs there possibility of adding a 4th station on Brimley and Eglinton in the future?
Answer
MetrolinxThe current funding for the Scarborough Subway Extension will create three new stations at Lawrence and McCowan, Scarborough Centre and Sheppard and McCowan. Even though this project will not build a station at Brimley and Eglinton, we strive to maintain options for future connectivity with all new transit developments.
Stations
AnonymousWill the McCowan Station at Sheppard Ave. take into account the future Sheppard Subway connection?
Answer
MetrolinxWithin the design, Metrolinx aims to ensure new transit being built has options for future connectivity.
Road Closures
AnonymousYou talked about properties that you will need but not about roads that will be moved. Are any roads being moved and if so where?
Answer
MetrolinxThere may be traffic impacts and temporary changes to roadways during construction. We are working with our constructor to identify these impacts and will share them with the community in advance of construction in these areas.
Permits
AnonymousWhen do I need to get a permit from Metrolinx?
Answer
MetrolinxIf your property was designated as a transit corridor land, you will need a permit if you are planning to build, change or place a building, other structure or road on or under your property, a permit from Metrolinx may be required in addition to (and prior to) any necessary municipal permits. The same applies to excavation and water drainage work.
Stations
AnonymousWill there be a station in Danforth road and Eglinton Avenue? If no, why not?
Answer
MetrolinxThe current funding for the Scarborough Subway Extension will create three new stations at Lawrence and McCowan, Scarborough Centre and Sheppard and McCowan. Even though this project will not build a station at Danforth and Eglinton, we strive to maintain options for future connectivity with all new transit developments.
